About the Event

This training is created for mental health professionals who are interested in learning about and practicing Adventure Therapy. Adventure Therapy, although an old form of therapy, has been growing in popularity in the last decade. Currently, Adventure Therapy is being practiced all around the world. From large organizations to small practices, therapy supplemented with adventure is proving to be more and more effective. This workshop, lead by Nicky Treadway, LMHC,  is perfect for individuals who love using movements and metaphor in their practice. Whether you've been doing adventure/outdoor based work for years or if this is something brand new to you, you'll fit right in.

The full training is two days, with day one being land focused and considered a general overview of the field of Adventure Therapy and day 2 being water focused and becomes a bit more nuanced with kayak specific skills trainings. Attendants have the option of attending both days or just day one. Only those who have completed the Land Based (day 1) training are able to register for the Water Based Training (day 2).

Exploration of Adventure Therapy:The Use of Adventure in Clinical Settings

Friday, 9:00am-3:00pm, 5 CEUs

This course will review history, practical application, risk management, how to integrate into current practice and demonstration of hard skills.

This course proves to be a wonderful starting place for any clinician looking to initiate practice as an Adventure Therapist. The instructor will start with a overview of the history in order to gain an understanding of the work that has and is currently being done around the world. The course will then progress into an exploration of theory with emphasis on processing theories. This instruction will help provide a frame of operation and understanding.

Adventure Therapy also brings up a fair amount of concern for risk. "How can I keep client's confidentiality?" or "What if someone gets hurt?". The instructors will discuss risk management basics including front-loading, consent, and risk response.

Lastly, the course will provide group material, complete with hard skill facilitation practice and demonstration.

Attendees are invited to dress comfortable and get ready to learn through experience.

The workshop starts promptly at 9:00am and the day will end at 3:00pm. There will be a 30 minute break for lunch, but attendees are invited to bring their lunch and enjoy their break exploring the property which is located on the Earman River.

This is a Florida Department of Health approved course and 5 Continuing Education hours will be provided for Florida Clinical Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Mental Health Counselors.

Part of this training includes American Canoe Association Level 1 Kayaking skills certification, a NECESSARY competency for anyone taking clients out in a kayaks. You will receive this certification by the end of this training (pending successful demonstration of kayaking skills). You do not need any kayaking experience to take this course.
